Due to declining attendance and youth interest the Huron Youth Connection has been closed.
At its peak, the program served a vital need for teens and tweens in the Huron community. The program was a great success, providing Huron's youth with a constructive, supervised space for learning, socializing and playing.
In 2008, the Huron City Schools reorganized the student population, shifting many of the core Huron Youth Connection participants from McCormick School to Woodlands, a significant distance from the Huron Public Library. In addition, the school day for this cohort was lengthened, another factor which seems to have influenced a reduced the demand for the Huron Youth Connection program.
The Huron Public Library is grateful for the opportunity to work with a committed group of local sponsors who gave much more than monetary support for this program. These individuals gave their time and a passionate interest in the lives of Huron's youth. Many served as members on the Huon Youth Connection Advisory Committee.
We appreciate the support of the following community organizations and institutions.
- Huron Rotary
- Huron City Schools Board of Education
- The Eagles
- The Lion's Club
- United Methodist Church of Huron
- Huron Parent-Teacher Organization
- St. Peter Church
- First Presbyterian Church
- The Knights of Columbus
The program was made possible by collaborative partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Erie and Lorain county. Paula May, program coordinator for the Clubs, has been a most dedicated and sensitive servant to HYC participants. Over the course of the program, Paula has touched the lives of many Huron youth as a mentor, friend, and advocate. Her presence here at the library will be missed.
The Library has begun a new strategic planning process. Through listening to the needs, hopes and aspirations of the community, we hope to develop new programs and services that support the educational and cultural development of Huron's youth.
