Speaker Series presentations cover timely topics of the day, local history or contemporary issues, history, travel,  culture, health and more. We welcome your feedback and recommendations for future programs.

Beginning Genealogy

This two-part class, presented by members of the Huron County Genealogy Society, will help you learn the ins and outs of starting a family genealogy. Please register before September 8.

Johnson Island Confederate Prison

In Sandusky Bay during the American Civil War, Johnson Island’s Prison was built to house captured Confederate Officers.  Director of the Maritime Museum, Annette Wells, will present on the day-to-day life for the prisoners and the uniqueness of their situation during the American Civil War.

The Wildlife of Old Woman Creek

Old Woman was designated a state nature preserve in 1979 and the following year became a research reserve. Mr. Frank Lopez will discuss the state of the bald eagles, beavers, and other species at the reserve.

No Money, No Beer, No Pennants

Author Scott Longert documents the history of the Cleveland Indians during the Great Depression in his book No Money, No Beer, No Pennants. Mr. Longert will discuss his book and have copies for purchase.

The Underground Railroad and its Lake Erie Connections

Prior to the American Civil War, many escaping slaves traveled through Erie County on their way to Canada and freedom.  Presenter, Annette Wells will share stories of escape, local abolitionists, and the ships that aided the slaves on their way to Canada.
