Kick-Off Week (June 8 – 12)

  • To kick off the 2026 Summer Learning Program, we’re celebrating for a whole week! Throughout kick-off week, enjoy activities like Cave Paintings, Yoshi only Mario-Kart, a mini dino egg hunt, Dino Footprints Challenge, and coloring pages.
  • Bookmark Contest, Maker Challenge, & Digby’s At-Home Challenge begin June 8.

Roar-some Celebration: Youth Learning Program Finale

  • (Pre-K – Grade 6) Celebrate the end of Summer Learning Program 2026 at Huron Boat Basin & Amphitheater with food trucks, dinosaur & archaeological activities, grand prizes, face painting, balloon art, caricatures, and more. Thursday, July 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. – Invite Only

Storybook Trail

  • In honor of SLP our summer book selection is The Dinosaur in the Garden.

America 250 – Ohio Lunch Bunch Storytime

  • Bring a blanket, pack a lunch, and get ready for a beautiful morning of outdoor storytime with Miss Melissa & Miss Jacqueline at Lakefront Park. Friday, July 10 at 11 a.m.

Night at the Museum Sunday Movie Matinee

  • The night watchman at a museum finds himself face-to-face with a dinosaur, tiny soldiers and Teddy Roosevelt when an ancient curse brings all the exhibits to life at night. Sunday, July 19 at 2pm

Movie at Dusk: The Land Before Time

  • The library staff will be at the Huron Boat Basin amphitheater to introduce this beloved 1980s animated classic to a whole new generation – while bringing a wave of nostalgia to those who grew up watching it. Join us for the heartwarming adventure of Littlefoot, an orphaned dinosaur who befriends four other young dinosaurs as they journey together in search of food, water, and hope. Contests

See staff at the Library for more information and to participate in any of the Summer Reading contests below.

  • Bookmark Contest: (Pre-K – Grade 12) Design a bookmark for the Library. Entry forms with instructions are available at the Library and online. A winner from each age group will be selected. Entries are due by Monday, July 6.
  • Digby’s At-Home Challenge: Bring Digby the Triceratops along for summer adventures. Track activities on the challenge gameboard and share photos of Digby by tagging HPL on social media. Return a completed gameboard for a chance to win a prize. Gameboards are due by Friday, July 24.
  • Passive Contests: These activities can be completed at the Library each week throughout Summer Reading.
    • PreK (ages 3½ to 5): Goin’ on a Dino Hunt
      Preschoolers are invited to look for Digby, the blue triceratops, hiding somewhere in the library (reading one of its favorite dinosaur books from our storytime). Once your child finds Digby’s location – stop at the main desk where your kiddo can receive a small dino-themed prize. One prize per week – a new hiding spot each week.
    • Children (Grades K – 2): Dinosaurs from Head to Tail
      From the tops of their head to the end of their tails, can you guess what dinosaur is featured each week just by their dino body part? Illustrations from Kwanchai Moriya featured in the book Dinosaurs from Head to Tail by Stacey Roderick.
    • Tween (Grade 3 – 6): Junior Paleontologist Field Guide
      Each week complete the paleontologist task. At the end of the six weeks, you will receive the collection of your entries along with a certificate of completion. One field guide entry will be selected each week for a prize
    • Teens (Grades 7 – 12): Ohio Rocks!
      Celebrate America’s 250th by joining our Unearth Ohio‑250 weekly challenge found at the teen desk. Complete tasks each week to receive an entry for a grand prize. Turn entries in at the main desk.
Summer Reading Challenge

Grab a Reading Record and register online to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. All ages are invited to log their reading and win prizes.

  • Registration opens Monday, June 8
  • Last day for tickets is Friday, July 24

Babies & Toddlers

  • Sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! Simply read with your young child and keep track of the books in your reading log. Your child will receive a small reward for every 100 books logged into our database. Come to the main circulation desk to mark off each milestone in your book count. The program ends when your child finishes 1000 books or they enter kindergarten, whichever comes first.

Preschool (Ages 3 ½ – 5)

  • For each book read with a grownup, fill out a prize ticket and drop it in the BIG can by the Youth Services Desk. The more read, the more entries to win the Grand Prize.

Children & Tweens (Completed Grades K – 6)

  • Read one book or read for one hour (at reading level) and log it on the official Reading Record. Bring the Reading Record to the Library to receive a sticker and a prize ticket for each book/hour for a chance to win weekly prizes. Read and record 10 books/10 hours to get an invitation to the invite-only Roar-some Celebration at the Huron Boat Basin.
  • Director’s Challenge: Want to keep reading? Children and Tweens can participate in the Library Director’s Challenge (20 books/20 hours) to receive a special certificate for going above and beyond.

Teen (Completed Grades 7 – 12)

  • For each book read (at reading level), earn five tickets. Read anything else (magazines, graphic novels, etc.) to earn a single ticket. Keep track on the Reading Record, and check in at the main desk to WIN BIG PRIZES.

Bagels for Books

Trabel’s Bagels is encouraging adults, teens and tweens to read. For every 5 books read during Summer Learning 2026, receive a complimentary bagel with cream cheese. Log books to get stamp on the official bagel bookmark. (Not offered for PreK and Children Summer Reading Challenges)
