Library of Things

The Library of Things is a unique selection of items that you wouldn't expect to find in a typical library collection. Huron Public Library is continuously expanding our collection of educational tools, technology equipment, and other useful and entertaining items. This is a comprehensive list of our Library of Things collection.

Some of these items can be checked out and taken home to use, while others require use inside the Library. If you have any questions about these items, or if you'd like to suggest new items for our Library of Things, please call the Library at (419) 433-5009 and speak to a staff member.

Explore a Hobby Kits

Our Library of Things now includes Explore a Hobby Kits! These bags are filled with everything you need to try out a new hobby.  Explore a Hobby kits made possible with a grant from The Mylander Foundation.

Metal Detector

Did you know our Library of Things includes a Metal Detector? Perfect for the backyard or taking to the beach, old treasures will become new. Patrons must have a valid ID and their library card at the time of checkout. A user agreement form must also be read and signed by patrons checking out the item for the first time. There are no back-to-back checkouts allowed.

  • Replacement/Lost Fee is $425.00
  • Must be checked out and returned to Circulation Desk

Wi-Fi Hotspots 

Wi-Fi Hotspots can connect multiple devices to the internet anywhere cell phone service is available. Hotspots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Patrons must have a valid ID and their library card at the time of checkout. A User Agreement Form must also be read and signed by patrons checking out a Hotspot for the first time. Patrons returning Hotspots must wait seven days before checking out another device.

Memory Kits

Thanks to a grant from the Erie County Community Foundation, our Library of Things now includes memory kits! Memory kits are intended for those patrons who are helping family members or friends with dementia. Topics in the fifteen kits include 1960s, pets, patriotic, handyman, winter, & more. Each kit includes a DVD, activity and picture cards, a busy bottle, and a book on the topic. A large print word search puzzle book, fidget toys, and information about the Alzheimer's Association are included for the patron to keep.

Birdwatching Kits

Check out a kit full of everything you need to start birdwatching including adult and child binoculars, three informational pamphlets, Merlin Bird App download guide, and Trailmaker backpack.

Puzzles

The Library has a collection of puzzles for adults and children. Check out a puzzle and complete it at home with friends and family. Adult puzzles are located upstairs in the Adult Services Department and children's puzzles are located in the Youth Services Department near the Circulation Desk.

Literacy Backpacks

Each Literacy Backpack is designed for a specific grade to help children practice reading and literacy skills, filled with books, games, fun activities, and a practice literacy workbook that you can keep! Stop by the Youth Services Department to grab a backpack for Preschool, Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, or 3.

  • Replacement/Lost fee is $100.00
  • Must be checked out and returned to Circulation Desk

Charging Cords and Headphones 

Forget your charging cord or headphones? We can help! The Library loans multi-device charging cords for items like phones or tablets. Headphones and headphone splitters can also be checked out for in-library use on computers or other devices.

  • Late fee is $5.00 per day
  • Replacement/Lost fee is $25.00
  • Must be checked out and returned to Circulation Desk

Nebula Projectors 

Nebula Projectors can be used to project streaming services like Netflix and YouTube videos or for PowerPoint presentations. Patrons are responsible for logging out of accounts upon return of devices. The Library does not provide free access to subscription streaming services. To check out a Nebula Projector, patrons must have a valid ID and their library card at the time of checkout. A User Agreement Form must also be read and signed by patrons checking out a projector for the first time.

Playaway Launchpads 

Playaway Launchpads are portable devices pre-loaded with educational games and videos created just for children. Each Launchpad is labeled with recommended ages and various subjects. Find the Launchpads in the Youth Services Department next to the Circulation Desk.

  • Replacement/Lost fee is $139.99
  • Must be checked out and returned to Circulation Desk

Ukuleles

Practice your skills or learn a new one with the Library's ukuleles. Each ukulele comes with a carrying case, a tuner, and a guide to help you get started. Ukuleles are kept behind the Circulation Desk. Ask a staff member to check one out today!

Huron Stories: Community Journals

Check out our community journals to add your story to our collection. Check out titles like: Ideas for the Future of Huron, Library Recommendations, Sketches, Good Vibes, or What's Behind the Door? Read what others wrote, add your own entry, then check out another one. Once a journal is full, it will be added to our regular collection for the community to check out like a regular book. All ages are welcome to participate. Find the display upstairs beside our new adult books.

Other

Huron Public Library has a number of other machines for public use. These machines are available during operating hours. Please call the Library at (419) 433-5009 with questions or to request assistance. 

  • Ellison Die Cut Machine Many dies are available, including letters, numbers, and animal shapes. The Die Cut Machine is available for use upon request and is located in the Youth Services Department office. Patrons must bring their own paper. Ask at the Circulation Desk for direction.
